Rumor has it that cleaning installed carpet during the winter months is a bad idea, especially here in the chilly, wet Pacific Northwest. Like all rumors, this stems from a few ideas that sound reasonable, but while these thoughts all seem reasonable, they're not completely factual. Getting your carpet cleaned in the winter is no different than getting it cleaned in any other season.

Way back then, the only way to clean installed carpet on-site was to use a soap-based shampoo. Once the foam dried, a vacuum cleaner was used to remove the visible excess, but most of the shampoo remained, and the process just pushed the soil deep into the carpet, while the shampoo residue reflected light to make the carpet appear clean. The belief that your carpet gets dirty faster after cleaning stemmed from this cleaning method.

Stain protectant is worn away with normal use and with some home cleaning products. Most carpet manufacturers recommend having stain protectant re-applied after each cleaning to preserve the like-new resistance to soils and spills. The conditions that lead to carpet needing to be cleaned also lead to the need to re-apply stain protection.
