Prepare For Winter
Weather can be difficult to predict, but being ready for possible power outages or snowfall requires planning, as a typical Northwest weather warning may not be enough time to buy snow tires or stock up on the items you need.
At D. A. Burns, we see the real effect of snow and heavy rain as we care for furnishings that have been damaged by water intrusion into a home. Surprisingly, widespread flooding is not the major reason for the weather related damage we often see.
Our Top 5 List:
- Surface drains around the home become blocked by fallen leaves, allowing ground water to seep under garage doors, into light wells and at other entry points.
- Clogged gutters and downspouts can allow water to rise under roofing material and leak through to the interior ceilings and walls.
- Sub-surface drains become clogged, allowing a build-up of pressure in the soil that can force water into basements that have never had a history of water leaks. (Remember that concrete can be considered a really hard sponge; even without cracks, water can move directly through concrete and mortar.)
- Undetected damage to roofing, roof vents and siding.
- Leaks caused by large windblown objects, tree limbs or the trees themselves.
